Breakdown

You sit in car broken down, wait on hard shoulder
ring for assistance, glance at time, check phone
for messages, turn attention to radio traffic
reports and news updates. You drink a flask of tea,
polish off a whole packet of chocolate biscuits.

Outside a woman drives by with screaming kids.
An articulated lorry rolls on. You look up out of
windshield, spy a bird in the sky, and wonder what
it would be like up there so far away with the rush
of cool wind and warm sun on your back.
